Composure Amid the Hurt

Scripture:  “For many gave false testimony against Him, and their testimony did not agree. Some stood up and gave false testimony against Him, ‘We heard Him say, “I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made in the hands.’” But even on this point their testimony did not agree.” – Mark 14: 57-59

Have you ever overheard someone talking about you behind your back, saying things you knew to be untrue about you? Maybe it was on the elementary school playground. Or in the high school cafeteria. Or maybe it was a more recent occurrence. No matter your age or maturity level, it never feels good. The sting is strong and deep and not easily forgotten.

Or maybe you have casually made remarks about one friend to someone else, without knowing the full story, then later felt terrible for allowing a quick slip of the tongue to ramble down a dead end road.

Chances are, we have each been on one or both sides of this fence at some time or another in our lives.

Can you imagine Jesus before the Sanhedrin, or Council, after his betrayal and arrest? One person saying this, another person saying that. Their stories not matching up. Tensions mounting….

Of all the marvel and wonder of Jesus, one of the most amazing things to me is his composure in the face of unimaginable injustice.

Mark 14: 60-62 reads, “Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus,’Have You no answer? What is it that they testify against You?’ But He was silent and did not answer. Again, the high priest asked Him, ‘Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?’ Jesus said, ‘I am; and you will see the Son of Man

seated at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.’”
