Our Family of God

Posted in

Scripture:  “For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.” – Ephesians 5: 8-9 (NLT)

As we worshipped at the “Church in the Field” recently, I felt we are indeed the “Family of God.”*  The lyrics are as follows:

We are the family of God,

Yes, we are the family of God;

And He’s brought us together

To be one in Him

That we might bring light to the world.”

I sat in my tailgate chair and couldn’t help but think of the individuals and situations around me.  A couple was in town visiting her 90-year-old parents.  The long-active parents could not attend in person, but were represented by their children.  What a legacy of faith.

A young couple, who were recently married in our sanctuary, were in-person worshiping with their family of God for the first time as a married couple.

A nine-month-old, who was baptized in her family’s century-old gown, was worshiping with her big sister under the tree.

And there was our “family” – created not by blood, but brought together by this church.  We sat in our pod – the six of us.  A soon-to-be one-year-old bouncing to the music, a four-year-old eloquently joining the congregation in the Lord’s Prayer, mother and father, and surrogate grandparents.  He brought us together to be one in Him.

Across the street something wonderful was happening for Eastminster and in the life of a recent seminary graduate.  Nick Demuynck was being ordained and installed as our pastor.

COVID-19 has changed our lives in so many ways these past five months.  However, COVID-19 hasn’t shaken the Church, it hasn’t stopped weddings, it hasn’t stopped baptisms, it didn’t stop an ordination, it hasn’t stopped the Church from grieving for those we have lost – it hasn’t even stopped Regina’s delicious meals.  We are the family of God established so that we might bring light to the world.

Prayer:  Gracious God, we thank You for showing us that You bring us together so that we may indeed bring light to the world during these trying times.  Continue to bless this family of God.  Amen.
